The Future of Industry: Developing a strategy for smart infrastructure – a whole life approach to infrastructure design
Tim is an Arup Director leading its London-based Infrastructure Design group. He has had extensive experience in the design of big infrastructure and devising how future infrastructure can best serve and shape future society.
Tim enjoys thinking about the deep strategic issues of how the construction industry should respond to the wave of change that is about to engulf it – probably the biggest inflection in how it has operated since the time of the Brunels. He believes that the potential of this future is currently under-imagined and many of the impacts – both good and bad – haven’t yet been understood.
He is particularly interested in how new technology will shape and change the careers available in our professions over the next 20 years. In his role as leader of a group of some 400 talented designers for all forms of infrastructure, he has a special interest in the development of people at all levels and the promotion of a diverse happy effective motivated workforce.
He is currently a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Policy Committee, the NCE (New Civil Engineer journal) Future Tech committee and the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) Infrastructure Transformation committee, where he was recently interviewed by a robot on the applications of Artificial Intelligence in infrastructure design over the next decades. He was also recently interviewed on future technology by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) flagship magazine about the impact of these new technologies.
